Portrait Series: Faces from Laos

In Laos begegne ich so vielen wunderschönen Gesichtern - von Männern, Frauen und Kindern. Besonders die älteren Gesichter erzählen oftmals Geschichten von langer harter Arbeit auf den Reisfeldern. Doch ein Lächeln ist nie weit entfernt - egal wo, ob auf dem Markt, in der Strasse oder in einem Restaurant wird ein Lächeln sofort erwidert. Die Diversität des Landes wird wunderschön widergespiegelt in den Gesichtern der Menschen. Wusstest du, dass es in diesem kleinen Land 49 ethnische Gruppen gibt?

Letzten Sonntag hatte ich Lust, zu Pinsel und Farbe zu greifen und habe diese Porträts gemalt, die auf Fotos basieren. Ich mag die tiefblaue Farbe der Tusche, die ich hier in einem chinesischen Laden gefunden habe. Am Ende des Beitrages findest du ein kurzes Timelapse Video, das einen kleinen Einblick in den Malprozess gibt.

Walking through the streets of Laos, I see so many beautiful faces of men, women and children alike. Oftentimes, the old faces tell stories of long and hard work in the ricefields, every wrinkle and every freckle testify of yet another day of planting, tending and harvesting. But a smile is never far away - no matter where, in the market, on the street or in a restaurant, smiles are always happily returned. The diversity of this country is beautifully reflected in the faces of the people. Did you know that there are 49 ethnic groups in this small country?

Last Sunday I was inspired to grab a brush and some ink and to draw these portraits based on photos. I really like the deep blue of the ink that I found here in a chinese shop. Watch the timelapse at the end of the post to see the work in progress.
