"The Living Crafts Centre": Ein wunderschöner, tropischer Garten und das Zentrum für die hohe Handwerkskunst des Webens und Färbens in Laos. Hier kann man den Meisterweberinnen bei ihrer Arbeit zuschauen und über ihre flinken Finger staunen, im Cafe dem trägen Mekong zuschauen und die Zeit vergessen, Kurse im Weben, Färben oder Bambusflechten belegen, im Shop eines der wunderschönen Produkte erstehen oder sogar auf Zeit hier wohnen: in der Mekong Villa. Jedes der 5 Zimmer ist einer anderen laotischen Volksgruppe gewidmet, Farben, Muster und natürlich die Textilien lassen einen eintauchen in die Traditionen und die Ästhetik jeder Gruppe.

Damit sich die Gäste der Villa im Zentrum und in der Stadt zurechtfinden, wurde ich für die Illustration und das Layout einer A4-Karte im Vintagestil angefragt. Die Luang Prabang Karte sollte nicht nur die wichtigsten Sightseeing- und Restauranttipps abbilden, sondern auch gewisse Aktivitäten in der Region aufnehmen. So ist ein Teil der Karte (Die Halbinsel) in realistischem Massstab gehalten, während sich die Strassen ausserhalb abstrahieren. Auf der Rückseite befindet sich eine Übersichtskarte über das Living Crafts Centre, eine kleine Sammlung an Tipps für den Nachtmarkt, sowie einige Erläuterungen zu den nummerierten Punkten auf der Frontseite. Dieses Projekt fasste einiger meiner Leidenschaften zusammen, Illustration, Wissensvermittlung, die Begeisterung für unsere Stadt und ihre Vielfalt an Schönem, und den Respekt und die Begeisterung über die Arbeit, die Ock Pop Tok hier und im ganzen Land leistet. Keine Frage also, dass dies ein sehr erfüllendes Projekt war!

"The Living Crafts Centre": A beautiful, tropical garden and the centre for the master handicraft of weaving and dyeing. Here you can see the master weavers at work and observe their skilled fingers creating beautiful pieces of art, you can sit in the cafe, overlooking the slow Mekong River and forget time, you can participate in weaving, dyeing and bamboo weaving classes, you can buy beautiful products in the shop or even stay here for a while: in the Mekong Villa. Each of the 5 rooms of the Villa is dedicated to one ethnic group of Laos, and the colors, patterns and of course the textiles let you immerse yourself in the traditions and aesthetics of these groups.

To make sure that guests of the Villa find their way around town and within the Living Crafts Centre, I was approached to create an illustrated map in vintage style, sized A4. The map of Luang Prabang does not only cover the most important sightseeing and restaurant tips but also displays some of the favorite activities outside town. Therefore, a part of the map - the peninsula - is kept in a realistic scale, while the streets outside of town are abstracted. On the back of the Luang Prabang map you can find an overview of the Living Crafts Centre, a small guide to the nightmarket as well as some explanations going along with the numbers on the frontpage of the map.

This project summarized many of my passions, illustration, educational material, the passion for our town and the respect and excitement for the work of Ock Pop Tok that they do here and in the whole country. Hence, its no question that this project was a very fulfilling one!
