Nepal: Schweizer Besuch in Pokhara

Nepal: A visitor from Switzerland in Pokhara

From Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, we continue to Pokhara. The city is located on a beautiful little lake. As one of the more touristy cities in Nepal, it offers a relatively good infrastructure. Here we meet Brigitta, Simon's mother - a wonderful reunion.

We depart early from Kathmandu to avoid rush hour. We manage it and get out of town without any problems. The road leads us first up, out of the valley basin and then down again along a river. This road is the main connection from Kathmandu with the lowlands and India and therefore also the busiest in Nepal. We are happy when we can turn onto a less traveled road in the direction of Pokhara. The path leads us through valleys, over hills and along rivers. Shortly before Pokhara we see them in the distance: majestic, white and shrouded in haze, we see several 8,000m mountains of the Himalayas. We arrive already at noon, and therefore have enough time to look for a nice guesthouse, which is no problem at all with so many options available.

At 8:30 p.m. the time has come: We receive a text message and take a taxi to the bus stop to pick up Brigitta. It's nice to see a familiar face and we're all looking forward to spending time together. But before that we still have to deal with something else: The rear tire of our Transalp has suffered quite a bit in the past 12,000km. The bad roads and of course the weight puts a toll on everything. A mechanic makes us a good offer and we now have a new Indian rear tire. Let's see how far we can get with that.

The World Peace Pagoda towers high above Pokhara and we are overwhelmed by the clear view of the snow-covered peaks.

In the meantime, the three of us explore Pokhara, eat our way through the large number of excellent restaurants, exchange experiences, show each other photos and enjoy spending time together. We plan to do a two-day hike on a nearby range of hills together. Postponed by one day due to rain, we start our hike on Friday morning before sunrise. The first ascent is steep, but we are rewarded on the ridge with a wonderful view with a Himalayan panorama illuminated by the early sun. The World Peace Pagoda towers high above Pokhara and we are overwhelmed by the clear view of the snow-covered peaks. Strengthened after a warm tea, we continue, everything more or less along the ridge of the range of hills. We pass a lot of different small villages and farms. The people here mostly live from agriculture and have a few farm animals. The steep slopes are made agriculturally usable by incredibly beautiful terraces. The fields are plowed by teams of buffalo or oxen and prepared for the rain that is soon to come. Everywhere friendly people greet us with the polite greeting formula "Namaste" that is common here. Although the standard of living is low, it feels like a little idyll. The people seem to be at peace with themselves.

Not quite at the height of our strength, we decide to spend the night in a hostel in a small village called Bhumdi. We spend the rest of the afternoon primarily enjoying the view. After a pleasant night we hope to be able to watch the spectacular sunrise over the Himalayas again. However, rising clouds block our view. So we set out and follow small paths back down into the valley. For the last 7km of dusty slope in the valley an old and rusty bus takes us back to Pokhara. Happy and tired we fall into bed.

The rest of the time we spend together on a boat trip on the lake, drinking lemonade and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere. Tomorrow, Tuesday, the farewell is approaching: Brigitta is flying back to Switzerland and we are driving to the west of the country to make ever new discoveries in this beautiful country.
